Even his voice is that of a monster's. Rasping, stagey, cruel, almost like he were auditioning to play the villain in an 80s Hindi movie. And there were people by the thousands listening with reverence to this Ghost who has never set foot on the country's soil since who knows how many years but has inflicted a remote controlled reign of terror plunging Pakistan's city of lights into such darkness since nearly two decades.

Syed Talat Hussain was on the floor of what looked like a balcony trying to escape bullets being fired in the general direction of the Aaj Television office. I can only watch Geo and there is little hope of them covering the Aaj TV situation, my only source is NDTV. I have been told Aaj showed a report in the morning detailing how the government machinery was being employed to try and make the 'Istehkaam-e-Pakistan' rally a success.

As I write, the 'rally' in Islamabad, more aptly describable as an assortment of bored looking hired people walking around aimlessly in different directions is being addressed by a visibly harrowed Musharraf behind a bullet proof screen talking about having faced bullets in two wars that he has fought for Pakistan. The irony of his statement obviously completely evading him. The contortions of his face announcing the fearful revelation that he realizes his days in power are now numbered (perhaps even his days in the world).

i am pretty much amazed by the mental instability of those who call that monster , a leader. I salute their loyalty and at the same time feel sympathy for their ignorance.

5-12 was a black day for the karachi. i feel really sorry for the departed souls, who are no longer with us. may their souls rest in peace.

the scenes of victims ,laying helplessly on the streets , waiting for the first aid;ambulances under heavy fire ; mobs armed with heavy automatic weapons firing at each other mercilessly . i was shocked to see that. where is the governor and machinary,to maintain law and order situation ,when there is dire need of it.

Sabahat, this is why I hardly address issues on the homefront on my blog because you and ZAK do it so brilliantly. I leave it to the experts.

Impeccable post!

I anxiously await the day when that nauseating, raspy voice of that oily tick with a british passport is silenced forever.

I read the following two reports in the Sunday Times of India, today:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/World/Pakistan/Karachi_burns_as_supporters_of_CJ_Gen_riot/articleshow/2039425.cms

The writer is Ishtiaq Ali Mehkri, a Karachi-based journalist.

Oops! I meant yesterday. The date has changed already!

@sidhusaheb:

One of those articles states:

'On the whole, the Islamist sector — the mullahs and the army, still remain solidly behind Musharraf. And in Pakistan, say sources, that is still the key.'

What Islamists hold the key i'd like to ask the man, those who never get any significant percentage of the vote? Admittedly they do have nuisance value, further exacerbated by Musharraf's need to stay in power, allowing situations like Lal Masjid to flourish and grow.

A Hindi movie villain? Whenever I hear that voice I always think that if ever there had really been the goat-devil Baphomet on earth, he would have sounded like that.

@uxuf:

lol, that's a good one, and Baphomet looks to me the spitting image of what I conjure up as Lord Voldemort in my head (thankfully being free of ever having seen an HP movie and being able to rely on my own imagery).

Waisay I don't know how much of those Hindi movies you have seen but its Gabbar Singh with his invasion of a peaceful village and asking its residents for their sweat and blood in exchange for (very temporary bouts) of peace is what I was thinking of.

Short but nicely written.

As for Talat, yes he did a fantastic job. He showed the naked face of MQM on that day and had to pay price for it too but history will remember AAJ TV and Talat for serving journalism and honesty to perfection.
