Rafael Nadal is out of the French Open, 2009! I really didn't think I could possibly be writing these words in the Fourth Round of the French Open. If there was one thing that was a given it was Nadal in that Roland Garros final. Who could have predicted such a thing as this? Oh, that is the beauty of sport. It really ain't over till the fat lady sings.I think I am really deadly for players whose fan I become. In the past few weeks I had begun to see Rafa in a different light, actually beginning to admire his simple humility and pluck. The moment I started feeling those benign thoughts he crashed out. Hmmm.....should have thought of it last year when he was pulevrizing Federer in the French Open final. But truth be told this is a bit of a let down. A Grand Slam final just isn't a Grand Slam final without the presence of those amazing two rivals.
Having said that, this is quite a slap in the face of all those commentators who were already beginning to claim that it is Rafa who should be seen as a contender for the all time great of tennis rather than Federer. A matter of jumping the gun a bit, don't you think? Federer has reached his position today through a sustained effort that has lasted years. He has not gone below a Grand Slam semi-final since 2006 and remained at the top for four years. But this French Open commentary was no fun, it took away the special 'historicity' of the event and they immediately switched over to the Ivanovic-Azarenka match, where the defending ladies champion also lost. Talk about bad broadcasting. We needed some disection, some good commentary on the match. I want Star Sports to begin giving the French as much importance as Wimbledon that has so many critical analyses before and after and so much build up and follow up to each match.
Truth be told I just wanted to see Vijay Amritraj's ashen face and a softening of his Nadal superlatives!! I am torn between disbelief, happiness and sympathy for Nadal, as well as sadness over losing out on another Nadal-Federer pressure cooker final. I love the two together! Viva Rafa. For the moment.
A bit of Soderling-Nadal history:
Two years ago Soderling took Nadal to five sets in Wimbledon in a match where Soderling mimicked Nadal's habit of fiddling with his shorts. Watch video here (Nadal's expressions are priceless).
Nadal said after the match that Soderling is the most unpopular player in the locker room.
"He's very strange," he said of Soderling. "I have said hello to him seven times to his face, and he has never said hello to me. He never answers. I thought it was me. But I asked around the locker room; almost nobody had anything nice to say about him."
But the more ironic comment is the following (taken from a Washington Post article):
"Is not nice," said Nadal, whose English is still evolving. "In the end, we will see what's happening in the end of the life, no?"
Aaahh....not quite the end of Rafa's life yet certainly but he sure stopped him in his tracks today.

for all good sports fans, at moments like these personal likes and preferences for the players do take a backseat to the sport itself.
good post, kiddo.
am still in shock. a player like nadal who is the epitome of grace, skill and dignity going out, is undeserving. its just never the same without a federer-nadal final, those two have spoiled us tennis fans.
also, its very unusal to hear nadal say those words for soderling. this is mr. diplomacy, who in my 5 yars of following him, has rarely had an ill word to say of any one. soderling must be a mass murderer then, heh.
@zakintosh: Gracias, as always
@sidrah: Heh, if you follow the link you will also see another thing upon which Nadal's stance is not neutral. I actually kinda admire his guts in speaking out.
I rather enjoyed watching Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Kim Clijsters and Tim Henman play ball at Wimbledon, recently.

It also served to remind me of a bygone era when tennis, especially the women's tour, was more about grace than glamour.
The French crowd were pathetic. They were literally roaring on Soderling's every point and hardly clapped when Nadal won a point which is just wrong.Soderling's not French, usually the crowd do this if their home player is playing.Nadal being their champion for four years deserved much much better treatment. It must have affected him(am taking nothing away from soderling he played brilliantly). He had one off day and instead of supporting him when he needed it most, the crowd started jeering him.Richard Gasquet vs Andy Murray at Wimbledon last year proves that the crowd does play a part,Gasquet said it himself. The crowd was with Murray which is understandable as Murray's Scottish but Soderling isnt French is he?And why the same support for Federer when he was losing to Haas? When Rafa was two sets down there were no roars for him,why for Federer? Is it because most French people are jealous of the Spanish? And that Federer speaks excellent French being Swiss and even jokingly said that he is 'half French'?With no Nadal,Djokovic,Murray,he'll get this one.Soderling against Gonzalez will be a good one, both of them have got massive forehands,it'll be interesting to see who wins.As for Monfils-Federer the crowd will be the ones to watch..Monfils is French and Federer is 'half French'..lol!Ive never seen such a biased crowd when two foreigners are playing..yet Rafa clapped for them in the end..what a great champ!(although later he said he was very disappointed with their behaviour)
And wasnt Djokovic supposed to be the imitator?Everyone's started copying him i guess..(i loved his imitations of nadal, federer, sharapova). Its a shame he went out too..
And Nadal always recovers from these kind of grand slam defeats.Tsonga and Gonzalez defeated him at the australian open but he beat the former in a masters event and the latter twice(once at the Beijing Olympics and then again at the Aus Open)so Soderling better watch out..Vamos Rafa!
@AIR: One of the tennis blogs i Follow (www.gotennisblog.com)had the follwoing to say about the French crowd:
The cheering hierarchy of the Parisian crowd:
French
Underdogs
Players on the brink of straight-set demolition (which explains Sharapova’s unexpected boost today while flaming out to Cibulkova)
Anyone not named Serena Williams or Rafael Nadal (at least after what Uncle Toni said.)
A really good blogpost on the French crowd

i still remember that wimbledon match.. i thought that the exchanges would go on forever.
Im acually quite happy about Nadal losing to Soderling as he was one of my picks to reach the second week on my blog.
so madam, you will be supporting Fed in the final right?
Yes Asif, I will be
Talking about commentators saying that Nadal is the greatest of all times they actually had a point.
Well when i was watching a match a few weeks ago one of the commentators said that " How can one call Roger Federer the greatest of all times if he can not even dominate his own generation?" well seriously being a Federer fan i seriously did not have an answer to the question...is it that its all about Federer's previous reputation or...no one else has managed to be this good so far.Need to know only watching tennis since one year..
@ I want Star Sports to begin giving the French as much importance as Wimbledon that has so many critical analyses before and after and so much build up and follow up to each match.
Well if not quite so they have began this Ace tennis show thing...every tuesday ahh i cant recall if its on espn or star sports but here's the link

Well did any one hear Nadal commenting " Well guys what can i say i lost" hmmm i don't know but i actually have started to like Nadal for some odd reason :| any ways Soderling has done great beating Gonzalez...who beat Murray...and also Davdenko.Well i really think that maybe just maybe Federer wont be able...too...Nah i think he will any ways best of luck to him that all.
One last question...Is there some other event taking place before wimbledon starts?? Something related to Queens Club.
